It doesn't happen too often that we got to review releases coming from the beautiful Greece territory. Rheinkaos is a newly formed four-piece, describing their music as 'black metal / industrial / experimental' - and says to be influenced by bands such as Ulver, Dødheimsgard, Thorns, Skinny Puppy, Paradise Lost, as well Aphex Twin. As their presskit, existing of ten (!) pages, says - this 'Demo 2008' is the debut release of this band.
Although this release contains just three songs - it comes with a lenght of over 20 minutes. Mixing this with the song structure of the tracks make every song sounds like a seperate journey. 'Drink The Effect', including beautiful female guest vocals by Gogo Melone (Luna Obscura) - and as well the opening track of this release, immidiately grabs your hand for a journey to the darker regions of the soul. Switching from orchestral based parts to atmospheric black metal (both modern midtempo and old school) parts to brutal electro metal parts, combined with little touches of wave and gothic metal. The song has surprisingly wellfitting electronic based intermezzo's, essential sampling and diverse vocal lines, and never gets bored despite the lenght of nearly eight and a half minutes. 'Witness To Your Disguise' opens with ambient tunes and dark riffing. Right after, the song transforms into a haunting atmosphere, grabbing you by the throat immidiately. Musically, this track is probably the most experimental track on the release, without getting too chaotic to lose atmosphere. The song consists of a spine made of gentle though powerful drumming and wicked sampling and keylines, slowly sailing from ambient parts to midtempo black metal parts to parts with connections to electro, wave and even a little neo-folk. As well essential are the use of the haunting, sometimes nearly schizophrenic vocal lines, and the experimental guitar solos with little references to blues and stoner! As well, the song consists of a repetitively haunting bassline, taking care of an even more threatning atmosphere. 'Bring The Shadows' is the most brutal track on the release, bringing you closer to the dark shadows that are wandering on this world. It guides you from midtempo and sometimes electro based black/death metal to ambient and wave, via small villages of orchestral tunes and gothic ambiances.
So - a final conclusion - just like Rheinkaos is a name you don't hear everyday, the music is a kind you don't hear everyday either. To compare it with known bands will therefore be an impossible task, although small links to bands like Attractor and Tenebrarum Infanteus (both on volume 3 of our compilation series) came in mind. To sum it all up - this is excellent and avantgarde industrial black metal with tons of 'outside the box'-influences, brilliant and essential for the music collection of anybody who's reading this.

"Black metal is a style which has evolved hugely from it's humble beginnings of much derivation and exotericism. For every band which has tried to rewrite the formula, there have been a thousand following it to the letter, so it is always very refreshing to hear experimentation outside of the commonalities. It is and was also a largely localised style, with most bands coming out of various caves in Scandinavia, so it seems ironic that I think the two most boundary-pushing bands to emerge in recent years are from Australia and Greece. One of these bands is Ne Obliviscaris and the subject of this review, Rheinkaos stand strongly alongside them.Simon Brand (Avant-Garde Metal)
Rheinkaos can be very bluntly described as a mixture of Arcturus, Ulver and Virus with more industrial elements but this description makes it look like they aren't doing anything new and that is just wrong. They command a multitude of styles outside of black metal in the short 20 minutes of this demo, with some of the more prominent being ambient, trance, jazz and something which I can only describe as Transylvanian lounge music. These styles are sometimes incorporated into the main BM parts of the music, but are often used in the numerous more mellow sections in the album. These segments appear many times in the demo,but always use different influences, instruments or structure to make sure that they always seem fresh.
The keyboard use on this release is fantastic. The tone jumps between many different sounds, with some being a synth with an organ voice, a synth with a more aggressive tone which wouldn't sound out of place on a trance record and a piano. The organ voice is utilised particularly
well as it contributes to the demented sound of some of the sections in the demo; makes you feel as if you're in Count Dracula's mansion.
The drums also fluctuate frequently between a standard (although I don't think standard is a word in these guy's dictionaries) blast beat and a very industrial sound, adding a lot of variation to the music. Vocals consist of male black metal screeching which is mixed tastefully and an alto female voice which adds some extra depth and class to the release.
I usually have a lot to say about the guitars in an album, but here I'm struggling as they aren't shown off as they are in most of the music I listen to the majority of the time. They experiment with dissonance and draw on lots of death metal influence which helps make their sound more full by assisting in the lower register. The tone usually changes to a clean one for the mellow parts with some repeat or reverb added for good measure.Rheinkaos' music isn't about focus on one instrument though, it's about everything coming together to form something very unique and enthralling. No matter how much I'm looking for something, I can't find anything objectively wrong with this album. The dissonance will put some people off, the trance elements will deter others, but if you're really open minded about what you listen to then this release is a must."
Dark tunes are flooding to my ears. They travel fast but it decisively at the same times through the wires of the headset. The introduction tries to drag me as the main melodies are waiting stealthily to seduct.... and that is what happened. The sounds of "Rheinkaos" achieved their goal and revealed the band’s insiration. Although the demo has only three tracks, the attitude is unambiguous about what they are prepared to offer. The cover is very beautiful, fully identifying the music inside the cd. Good job has done here, giving us a feeling of what the listener will listen as the cd turns after pushing play. As far as the music compositions, there are too many influences from different genres such as gothic, ambient, progressive, death, black, and a little bit of avantgarde. The songs are original and they "manage" to trick and surprise the listener because the don’t obey a certain music logic, but follow a more unorthodox path. Also, the prodcution is great , as well as the audio mixing, keeping the tracks solid.
In conclusion "Rheinkaos" is a promissing band. The are relly creative during this period and we hope to continue like that. I hope to listen to more of their songs, because the three tracks of the demo made me want some more.

"Σκοτεινοί ήχοι αρχίζουν και πλημμυρίζουν τα αυτιά μου. Ταξιδεύουν γρήγορα αλλά συνάμα καθοριστικά μέσα από τα χάλκινα καλώδια των ακουστικών. Η εισαγωγή προσπαθεί να με παρασύρει καθώς οι κύριες μελωδίες περιμένουν ύπουλα να με αποπλανήσουν....και έτσι έγινε. Ο ήχοι των "Rheinkaos" πέτυχαν τον απώτερο σκοπός και έδειξαν την έντονη έμπνευση της μπάντας.
Αν και το demo τους αποτελείται μόνο από τρία κομμάτια, οι διαθέσεις είναι ξεκάθαρες για το τι είναι διατεθειμένοι να προσφέρουν μουσικά ως μπάντα. Αλλά ας πάμε στα ενδότερα...ξεκινώντας από το εξώφυλλο!
Το εξώφυλλο είναι πάρα πολύ όμορφο, πλήρως ταυτισμένο με την μουσική που υπάρχει στο cd. Έχει γίνει καλή δουλειά δίνοντας μας μία συναισθηματική φόρτιση για το τι θα ακούσουμε καθώς το σιντί θα γυρίζει με το πάτημα του play. Όσον αφορά τώρα τις μουσικές συνθέσεις, βλέπουμε πως υπάρχουν πάρα πολλές επιρροές από διάφορα είδη όπως gothic, ambient, progressive, death, black, και μία μικρή δόση avantgarde. Ο ήχος είναι αυτό που λέμε "ψαγμένος", κυριολεκτικά με όλη τη σημασία της λέξης, μιας και τα τραγούδια καταφέρνουν να σε ξεγελάσουν και να σε εκπλήξουν σε πολλά σημεία μιας και δεν υπακούνε σε μία συγκεκριμένη λογική, αλλά ακολουθούν ένα πιο ανορθόδοξο μονοπάτι. Επίσης η παράγωγη είναι πάρα πολλή καλή, όπως επίσης και το μιξάρισμα μιας και τα περάσματα μεταξύ των οργάνων είναι ομαλότατα και έτσι διατηρείται το συμπαγές των κομματιών.
Εν κατακλείδι οι "Rheinkaos", είναι μία μπάντα που υπόσχεται πολλά. Συνθετικά δείχνουν ότι είναι ορεξάτοι, και πως αυτή τη περίοδο είναι δημιουργικοί. Ευελπιστώ να ακούσω και τις υπόλοιπες συνθέσεις τους, μιας και τα τρία κομμάτια του demo μου άνοιξαν την όρεξη. Rating: 85%
"Λοιπόν εκεί που νόμιζα ότι τελικά ο πολύς πειραματισμός δεν είναι και από τις αγαπημένες ασχολίες των ελληνικών συγκροτημάτων, ήρθαν οι Rheinkaos για να με αφήσουν να ψάχνομαι. Το demo τους είναι πάρα πολύ κοντά στον ήχο των Ulver (της μεταγενέστερης περιόδου) και σαφώς βασισμένο στην ηλεκτρονική μουσική με κάποια ψήγματα black metal και industrial. Ομολογουμένως δεν είναι και από τα πιο εύκολα ακούσματα, αλλά αναμφισβήτητα αν μπείτε βαθιά μέσα τους, τότε σίγουρα θα έχετε ν’ αποκομίσετε πάρα πολλά. Αποφεύγουν τις φανφάρες και τις περιττές διαδρομές και είναι άμεσοι όπως και όπου πρέπει. Το καλό με τους Rheinkaos είναι ότι δεν ακούγονται γραφικοί και στυγνοί αντιγραφείς των μεγάλων Ulver. Rheinkaos sind gleich mal vorweg keine Dissection Kopie wie der Bandname vermuten lassen würde. Sie bewegen sich in eine ganz andere ja eigene Richtung die ihnen ziemlich gut zu Gesicht steht. Die Griechen liefern eine Mischung aus BM - Elementen gepaart mit Gothic, Industrial und experimentellen Ansätzen welche sich zu den drei Tracks auf ihrer Demo 2008 zusammenfügen. Für Puristen kommt hier wohl der Stopppunkt (so viele p ;)), die aufgeschlosseneren Geister könnten aber mit dieser Erstauskopplung ihre helle, wenn auch kurzweilige, da nur zwanzig Minuten lange Demo, Freude haben. Rheinkaos schaffen es den Spagat zwischen Brutalität und Schönheit zu spannen und dem ganzen ihre eigene Note zu verleihen. So erwarten den Hörer stakkato-artige Riffs, jazzige Melodien, innovative Keyboardflächen, hasserfülltes und gotteslästerliches Geknurre, hartes und abwechslungsreiches Drumming sowie zarte weibliche Vocals als auch allerlei andere Spielereien. So werden Stimmen künstlich verändert, Samples werden eingesetzt und die Synthesizer werden an ihre Grenzen getrieben. Was sich jetzt nach schier, dem Black Metal unverträglichen Komponenten anhört wird von den Mannen aus Griechenland aber zu einer abwechslungsreichen und herausragenden Mutation verschmolzen, welche sich nicht zu scheuen braucht aus der Dunkelheit ins Licht zu treten. Freunde von Ulver, Acturus, DHG als auch von jazzigen oder elektronischen Klängen sollten auf alle Fälle einmal ein Ohr riskieren, ich warte jedenfalls schon aufs erste Album.
FAZIT:
Ein durchaus mutiges Unterfangen, welches uns Rheinkaos hier um die Ohren hauen. Mir ist es unverständlich warum die ganzen Staubsaugerkappelen Labels absahnen und Innovatoren wie diese hier noch immer ohne Vertrag dastehen."

BlackMetal.At
After my first spin of RHEINKAOS.. promo cd, I decided to go with the tag “oddball” and here's why: 1) there's an ongoing focus around all things avantgarde, 2) the songs are clad in an obscure, minimal sound production that..s supposed to keep the atmosphere far away from turning into even the smallest glimpses of mainstream vibes.
Greece has been known for having these mystique formations in the underground. Summing up all bands together would result in many minutes of underproduced, occult, mythological, dark music, and with these three tracks, this particular scene has got itself an extra twenty minutes of material hehe. The band's music draws influences from many second wave Progressive/Experimental Black Metal monikers (ULVER, SOLEFALD, THE KOVENANT, ARCTURUS, ENSOPH), Jazz, Wave/Trance, Industrial, Techno and some Classical as well, forming a kaleidoscopical sound if you will. Aspiring visions and musicianship has lead into many a timeless album, but that's not the case here. RHEINKAOS are indeed treading several genres, exploring, which is healthy if you're gonna create something fresh, but so far (three tracks into a hopfully long career) they're kinda searching in the dark, finding things.
While using the term “oddball”, the words “adventurous” and “exciting” are two of many adjectives that would fit well into a “neutral” description of this vast musical universe: 1) because of rich ideas in songwriting and arranging, 2) although a bit scattered, the execution of these ideas indeed show some promise of a greater sound to come. If I had to pick one, my fave would be “Drink The Effect”; industrial soundscapes clash with solemn piano arrangements displaying the more experimental facettes, while female vocals attract on top of blastbeats and moody twin guitars and symphonic keyboards, affirming the “traditional” Extreme Metal roots.
When you hear these songs, you'll find my review rather vague as I found myself thinking “what the hell?”, and thirty seconds after suddenly going “hmm, interesting...”. All I can say is if you crave something different, something beyond the norm, this band may just knock your socks off.

Και ναι, βάζοντας στο cd player το demo των Rheinkaos οι εφιάλτες μου πήραν μεμιάς σάρκα και οστά! Αν κι έφτασε αρκετά καθυστερημένα στα χέρια μου το συγκεκριμένο cd (η ημερομηνία κυκλοφορίας φαίνεται να είναι ο περασμένος Σεπτέμβριος), μπορώ να πω χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη πως τα τρία κομμάτια που περιέχει έχουν άρωμα ονείρων και στοιχειωτικών οραμάτων. Ο τρόπος που συνδυάζονται πλήκτρα, κιθάρες και black φωνητικά μπορεί άνετα να χαρακτηριστεί μοναδικός, ενώ προσωπικά θα ήθελα η guest γυναικεία παρουσία στα φωνητικά (και δεν είναι άλλη από τη Γωγώ των επίσης «δικών» μας Luna Obscura) να ήταν μόνιμη, μιας και ταιριάζει απόλυτα στη μινιμαλιστική, πειραματιζόμενη δομή των κομματιών.
Προβληματίστηκα ιδιαίτερα βέβαια ακούγοντας το demo ξανά και ξανά (σημειώστε πως η παραγωγή θα μπορούσε να ανήκει σε επίσημη κυκλοφορία), όταν διαπίστωσα πως τα "Drink The Effect", "Witness To Your Disguise" και "I Bring The Shadows" είναι τόσο διαφορετικά μεταξύ τους, που μου έδωσαν την αίσθηση πως δεν είναι αρκετά ξεκάθαρος ο μουσικός ορίζοντας της μπάντας. Οι επιρροές σαφέστατα είναι πολλές και ποικίλες, ξεχωρίζοντας άνετα τη μαυρίλα των Satyricon, την αρρώστια των Dodheimsgard, τα ambient μέρη των Aslan Faction και τα πλήκτρα των Samael, όμως το σύνολο που δημιουργούν είναι αρκετά συγκεχυμένο, εναλλασσόμενο από τραγούδι σε τραγούδι.
Τα τρία παραπάνω κομμάτια του τετραμελούς σχήματος μπορείτε κι εσείς να ακούσετε στο myspace της μπάντας (www.myspace.com/rheinkaos) και να βγάλετε τα δικά σας συμπεράσματα. Εμείς τους ευχόμαστε να ξεδιαλύνει γρήγορα το ομιχλώδες τοπίο του δικού τους «kaos», κάνοντας πιο εύκολη την ακρόαση για τους φίλους της καλής μουσικής.

Οι δύσβατοι δρόμοι είναι για τους τολμηρούς; Οι RHEINKAOS σε αυτό το demo έχουν φροντίσει να δείξουν την ιδιαιτερότητά τους απροκάλυπτα, χωρίς συμβιβασμούς και παίρνοντας διαζύγιο από τις κιθαριστικές επιταγές της εποχής. Η μπάντα είναι νεοσύστατη, έχει δημιουργηθεί το 2007 αλλά έχει προλάβει να διαμορφώσει ένα ευδιάκριτο προσανατολισμό προς το σκοτεινό και την μετάβαση στο ψυχρό.Με την κιθάρα να αποτελεί μόνο το στρώμα που θα δεχτεί τις υπόλοιπες γεύσεις όλες οι ηλεκτρονικές απηχήσεις είναι το βασικό συστατικό του industrial περιεχομένου. Πάνω σε αυτό οι RHEINKAOS πειραματίζονται και παίζουν με την πρόκληση, είτε έχοντας μια γυναικεία υπόσταση ως διαβατήριο για το απόκοσμο είτε καραδοκώντας με jazz τεχνάσματα και πειραματισμούς, οι οποίοι δεν φαντάζουν σε καμία περίπτωση ως ξένο σώμα. Το σκοτεινό αστέρι που λέγεται "Bring The Shadows" και ταξιδεύει περιπετειωδώς από μια ζοφερή αγωνία σε μια τελείως hardοροκάδικη απελευθέρωση, μας βοηθά στο θάμπωμα.Τώρα, αν δεν σας φτάνουν οι δόσεις αρρώστιας που προσφέρουν οι RHEINKAOS μπορείτε να καταφύγετε σε παρόμοιους ηλεκτρονικούς εφιάλτες, όπως οι SUN OF THE BLIND.

Affrontare questo cd non è tra le cose più semplici da fare, in quanto nelle poche tracce (tre per venti minuti circa) ivi incluse, si possono riscontrare un sacco di influenze che potrebbero ingannare ripetutamente l’ascoltatore. Le delicate note di piano (stile Massive Attack), l’atmosfera cibernetica e le angeliche vocals di Gogo che si ritrovano in “Drink the Effect”, sembrano portarci in una direzione che ben presto nel corso del brano, i nostri saranno in grado di smentire e ribaltare follemente. Eh già, perché non appena la voce (oscura) di Savaoth fa il suo ingresso e i nostri iniziano a martellare con le atmosfere tipiche del sound ellenico, una serie di suoni soffusi, delicati e maledettamenti inattesi (presi in prestito dalla trance music o dalla lounge), ci stordiscono per la loro capacità di disorientarci completamente. È solo calma apparente che poi si trasforma in furia, ma furia controllata, che mi ha riportato alla mente i suoni primordiali dei grandiosi Septic Flesh. Il quartetto greco genera suoni incredibilmente piacevoli e di gran classe che si insinuano nella mia mente e mi spingono a volerne di più, in quanto derivativi da generi estranei al metal (interessanti infatti alcune incursioni jazz). La seconda “Witness to Your Disguise” mette in luce la vena più industrial della band, non perdendo tuttavia, nel suo incedere ipnotico e claustrofobico, la propria identità e le proprie origini. D’altro canto l’idea che sta dietro ai Rheinkaos è quella di sperimentare l’ambient e le sue strutture minimalistiche, mantenendo comunque una propria identità heavy metal, che finirà per trasformarsi nella conclusiva “Bring the Shadows”, in estremismo black/death, mostrandoci l’enorme classe che risiede nelle corde di questi musicisti. Quest’ultima è decisamente la song più violenta del lotto che magari più si avvicina agli standard della scena death, tuttavia alcuni suoi passaggi evidenziano ancora una volta un talento smisurato per questa band, capace di condurre sonorità d’avanguardia (alla Ulver per intenderci) in chiave estrema. Come al solito, so che le mie parole vogliono dire tutto e niente, ma vi invito ad andarli a cercare sul web per capire come si possa ancora fare musica originale in ambito estremo e poterlo contaminare con elementi techno o free jazz. Se siete dotati di una mentalità aperta, contattate per favore la band, per far vostro questo Mcd, non ve ne pentirete. Ho limitato la votazione solo perché si tratta di 3 tracce, ma sarebbe potuta essere molto più alta. Eccezionali!Rating: 80/100
